Chronology

June 1790

Friedrich Albert Carl Gren launches "Journal der Physik" (Journal of Physics). At first, it appears on commission, and since 1791 completely at the publisher Johann Ambrosius Barth.

1795

Continuation as "Neues Journal der Physik" (New Journal of Physics)

1799

After Grens' demise in 1798, Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert realizes Gren's plan to continue the journal as "Annalen der Physik" (Annals of Physics). At first, the journal is published in the Rengerschen Buchhandlung (Renger's bookstore) in Halle/Germany.

1809

Acquisition of the "Annalen der Physik" by the publisher (Verlag) Johann Ambrosius Barth.

1819

Gilbert changes the title in "Annalen der Physik und physikalischen Chemie" (Annals of Physics and Physical Chemistry).

1824

After the death of L.W. Gilbert the new editor-in-chief Johann Christian Poggendorff takes over the journal and changes the title in "Annalen der Physik und Chemie" (Annals of Physics and Chemistry).

1877

J.Ch. Poggendorff died. Editor-in-Chief is Gustav Wiedemann, with Co-Editor Hermann von Helmholtz.

1895

After the demise of H.v. Helmholtz, Max Planck becomes Co-Editor.

1900

Paul Drude becomes new Editor-in-Chief. The title of the journal is changed back to "Annalen der Physik".

1906

Editors-in-Chief Max Planck and Wilhelm Wien.

1929

Eduard Grüneisen takes over editorship.

End 1944

Collapse of all production possiblities in the publishing house and cessation of work.

1947

Licensing and continuation of the "Annalen der Physik" with E. Grüneisen and Friedrich Möglich, as well as mit Max Planck, who departs in the same year though.

1949

After E. Grüneisen death F. Möglich takes over editorship.

1952

Hans Kopfermann joins the board of editors.

1957

F. Möglich dies, Gustav Richter becomes Editor-in-Chief together with H. Kopfermann.

1961

H. Kopfermann leaves the Editors-in-Chief Board and is replaced by W. Walcher.

1983

Hans-Jürgen Treder becomes new member of the Editors-in-Chief board.

1986

Gustav Richter resigns and H.-J. Treder continues together with W. Walcher.

1991

H.-J. Treder and W. Walcher resign.

1992

Hüthig GmbH, Heidelberg takes over the publishing house J.A. Barth Verlag and thus also "Annalen der Physik". Bernhard Mühlschlegel becomes new Editor-in-Chief.

1998

B. Mühlschlegel resigns. Ulrich Eckern takes over editorship of the journal. Verlag Wiley-VCH (Berlin) takes over several journals from the Hüthig GmbH, among them also "Annalen der Physik".
